Why Use IBOA?

A strategic monomer for UV/EB formulation:

  • High Tg & Hardness: The unique bicyclic structure imparts exceptional hardness and scratch resistance to coatings.

  • Low Shrinkage: Significantly reduces volume shrinkage during polymerization, improving adhesion to difficult substrates (plastic/metal).

  • Excellent Diluency: Outstanding thinning power for high-viscosity oligomers without sacrificing performance.

  • Chemical Resistance: Enhanced resistance to solvents, water, and weathering in cured films.

  • Low Odor & Toxicity: Safer working environment compared to conventional acrylate monomers.

Industrial Applications

IBOA delivers high reactivity, superior hardness, and minimal shrinkage for demanding industrial applications:

UV/EB Curable Coatings

Reactive diluent for epoxy-acrylic and urethane acrylate oligomers. Reduces viscosity and internal stress while maintaining film hardness.

End Products: Automotive clearcoats, wood furniture finishes, metal protection coatings, plastic coatings (PET/PE/PP/PC), electronic conformal coatings.

️ High-Performance Printing Inks

Curing agent providing excellent scratch resistance, gloss retention, and chemical durability for demanding print applications.

End Products: UV screen inks, UV inkjet inks, packaging inks, outdoor signage, flexible film inks, label inks.

3D Printing Resins (SLA/DLP)

Low shrinkage ensures dimensional accuracy; high Tg provides part rigidity and heat resistance.

End Products: Dental models, jewelry casting patterns, engineering prototypes, miniatures, functional parts.

Adhesives & Sealants

Improves cohesive strength, peel resistance, and thermal stability in pressure-sensitive and structural adhesives.

End Products: Optical clear adhesives (OCA), medical device bonding, PSA tapes, electronic assembly adhesives.

Specialty Applications

Dental restorative resins (low shrinkage reduces sensitivity), fiber optic coatings, optical disc coatings, OTFT polymer dielectrics, photoresists.

Frequently Asked Questions about Isobornyl Acrylate (IBOA)

Isobornyl Acrylate (IBOA) is a monofunctional reactive diluent extensively used in UV/EB curable systems. Its critical applications include automotive coatings, screen and inkjet printing inks, 3D printing resins (SLA/DLP), and adhesives. It is favored for improving adhesion to difficult substrates like plastic and metal.

The glass transition temperature (Tg) of IBOA homopolymer is high, approximately 94°C. This is due to its unique bicyclic isobornyl structure, which imparts exceptional hardness, scratch resistance, and thermal stability to cured films while maintaining good flexibility.

Yes. IBOA contains approximately 76% Bio-Renewable Carbon (BRC), as it is derived from pine oil (turpentine). This makes it an ideal monomer for sustainable formulations aiming to meet green building standards and reduce carbon footprint.

The main difference lies in reactivity. IBOA (Acrylate) cures significantly faster, making it suitable for UV/EB radiation curing. IBOMA (Methacrylate) reacts slower but offers better weatherability and is typically used in thermoplastic acrylic resins or 2K systems.

IBOA is a skin sensitizer (H317), so proper PPE is required. However, it benefits from low volatility and lower irritation compared to many other monofunctional acrylates. Always refer to the SDS for detailed safety handling.

Our IBOA is a direct replacement for Sartomer SR506, Allnex Ebecryl IBOA, IGM PureOmer 4012, and Kowa IBXA. It meets strict industry specifications with ≥99.2% purity and excellent batch consistency.
