Commercial Grade & Key Specifications

Parameter Purchasing Consideration
Appearance Clear colorless to light yellow liquid
TMPTA Content / Composition According to the applicable commercial specification and batch COA
Viscosity at 25°C Grade-dependent; confirm against the supplied product specification
Color Confirm value and analytical scale such as APHA / Pt-Co according to actual COA
Acid Value Grade-dependent; confirm for formulation-sensitive applications
Water According to the supplied commercial grade and batch COA
Inhibitor Type and concentration should be confirmed when storage stability or cure behavior is process-sensitive

Commercial TMPTA grades can differ in composition, viscosity, color, acid value, water and inhibitor system. Final acceptance criteria should follow the mutually confirmed specification and actual batch COA.

Key Applications of TMPTA

UV / LED Curable Coatings TMPTA is used as a trifunctional reactive diluent and crosslinking monomer in radiation-curable coatings for wood, plastics, metals and other substrates. Its functionality can contribute to fast cure response, high crosslink density, hardness and chemical resistance.
UV / EB Printing Inks TMPTA is widely used in radiation-curable printing and graphic-arts formulations. It can reduce formulation viscosity while becoming part of the cured polymer network.
Adhesives TMPTA can be combined with epoxy acrylate, polyurethane acrylate, polyester acrylate and other oligomers to modify viscosity, cure response and crosslink density in radiation-curable adhesive systems.
Electronics & Functional Materials TMPTA is used in selected electronic coating and functional-material formulations where multifunctional acrylate crosslinking and radiation curing are required.
Crosslinking Polymerization Its three acrylate functionalities make TMPTA useful where high crosslink density, hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance are desired in free-radical curing systems.
Why Is TMPTA Called a Reactive Diluent?

TMPTA can reduce the processing viscosity of selected acrylated resin and oligomer formulations. Unlike a conventional volatile solvent, however, TMPTA contains polymerizable acrylate groups and participates in UV, LED or EB curing, becoming part of the final polymer network. For this reason, it is more accurately described as a reactive diluent rather than a conventional solvent.

TMPTA vs TPGDA

Item TMPTA TPGDA
Functionality 3 2
Typical Role Trifunctional reactive diluent / crosslinking monomer Difunctional reactive diluent
General Formulation Tendency Higher crosslink density, faster cure response and higher hardness Lower functionality with a different balance of viscosity, reactivity and flexibility
Direct Replacement? Not automatically.Changing between TMPTA and TPGDA may alter cure speed, viscosity, shrinkage, flexibility, hardness and final film performance. Reformulation and application testing are recommended.

Why Should Buyers Look Beyond Purity?

Viscosity Commercial TMPTA grades can have different viscosity profiles, which may directly affect oligomer dilution, processing, flow and leveling.
Color Low-color requirements can be particularly important in clear coatings, varnishes and light-colored ink systems.
Acid Value & Water Acid value and water may affect sensitive resin systems and formulation stability, so target limits should be evaluated together with the main composition.
Inhibitor System Commercial acrylate monomers may use polymerization inhibitors to improve storage stability. For process-sensitive applications, inhibitor type and concentration should be confirmed against the actual grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TMPTA? TMPTA is the common abbreviation for Trimethylolpropane Triacrylate, CAS 15625-89-5. It is a trifunctional acrylate monomer widely used as a reactive diluent and crosslinking monomer in radiation-curable systems.
Is TMPTA a solvent? TMPTA is more accurately described as a reactive diluent. It can reduce formulation viscosity, but unlike a conventional volatile solvent it participates in free-radical polymerization and becomes part of the cured network.
How many functional groups does TMPTA have? TMPTA is a trifunctional acrylate and contains three polymerizable acrylate functionalities.
What is TMPTA mainly used for? Typical applications include UV, LED and EB curable coatings, printing inks, adhesives, wood and plastic coatings, metal coatings and selected electronic or functional-material formulations.
What is the difference between TMPTA and TPGDA? TMPTA is trifunctional while TPGDA is difunctional. TMPTA generally favors higher crosslink density and hardness, while TPGDA provides a different balance of viscosity, reactivity and flexibility. They should not be treated as direct drop-in replacements without formulation testing.
Is all commercial TMPTA 99.9% pure? No universal 99.9% specification should be assumed solely from the CAS number. Commercial grades may use different composition and analytical specifications, so buyers should review the actual TDS and batch COA.
Why does TMPTA contain an inhibitor? Reactive acrylate monomers may be stabilized with polymerization inhibitors to reduce the risk of unintended polymerization during storage. The inhibitor type and concentration depend on the commercial grade.
What specifications should I check before buying TMPTA? In addition to composition or assay, buyers should consider viscosity at 25°C, color, acid value, water, inhibitor type and concentration, as well as the performance requirements of the target formulation.
Can Royalchem provide COA, SDS and TDS? The applicable COA, SDS, TDS, packaging and related specification information can be confirmed according to the actual commercial supply source and grade.
