Key Applications

TTIP is a highly reactiveorganic titanium alkoxide and Lewis acid catalystused in chemical synthesis, polymer processing, coatings and inorganic-material preparation.

  • Esterification & Transesterification:TTIP is used as a catalyst for esterification and transesterification reactions in the manufacture of polyesters, plasticizers, (meth)acrylic esters and other specialty esters.

  • Condensation & Polymer Chemistry:The organic titanate can catalyze condensation, addition and selected polymerization reactions and is used in a variety of resin and specialty-chemical processes.

  • Coatings & Adhesion Promotion:TTIP can react with hydroxyl- or carboxyl-functional polymers and binders to promote crosslinking and improve adhesion. It is also used for surface treatment of glass, metals, fillers and pigments.

  • Paint & Polymer Crosslinking:Organic titanate chemistry can be used to crosslink suitable –OH and –COOH functional polymers and to modify coating and binder performance.

  • TiO₂ & Sol-Gel Precursor:Controlled hydrolysis and condensation of TTIP provides a widely used route to TiO₂ powders, nanoparticles, films, coatings and other titanium-containing oxide materials.

  • Organic Synthesis:TTIP is also used as a Lewis acid reagent in reactions such as Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation and other specialized synthetic transformations.

Industrial Applications of TTIP

Esterification / Transesterification TTIP is a highly active Lewis acid catalyst for esterification and transesterification processes and is relevant to polyester, plasticizer, (meth)acrylic ester and specialty-ester manufacturing.
Coatings & Adhesion TTIP can be used for adhesion promotion, surface modification and crosslinking of suitable polymer binders. Relevant substrates include glass, metals, fillers and pigments.
Polymer & Resin Processing Organic titanate catalysts are used in condensation, addition and selected polymerization processes and can also be incorporated into reactive coating and binder systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Titanium Tetraisopropoxide, Titanium Isopropoxide and Titanium Tetraisopropanolate the same product? Yes. These names are commonly used for the same titanium alkoxide with CAS number 546-68-9. Other commercial names include Titanium(IV) Isopropoxide, Tetraisopropyl Titanate and Tetraisopropyl Orthotitanate.
What is TTIP mainly used for? TTIP is primarily used as an organic titanium Lewis acid catalyst in esterification, transesterification and related chemical processes. It is also used in coatings, adhesion promotion, polymer crosslinking and TiO₂ / sol-gel materials.
Is “TiO₂ equivalent 28%” the purity of TTIP? No. A TiO₂-equivalent value of approximately 28% is a compositional value derived from the titanium content of the molecule. It should not be described as product purity. Commercial quality is better specified using parameters such as Ti content, chloride, color and other relevant impurities.
Why must TTIP be protected from moisture? TTIP readily hydrolyzes when exposed to water or humid air. Moisture contamination can cause cloudiness, precipitation and changes in product performance. Containers should therefore remain tightly sealed and moisture exposure should be minimized during storage, sampling and formulation.
Can TTIP crystallize during cold-weather shipping? Yes. TTIP has a freezing/melting point close to normal room temperature, typically around 14–19 °C depending on the reference grade. Crystallization during cold transport does not necessarily indicate product degradation. The material can generally be returned to a homogeneous liquid by controlled warming and agitation while keeping it dry.
Can TTIP be used as a TiO₂ precursor? Yes. Titanium isopropoxide is widely used as a titanium alkoxide precursor in sol-gel and related processes for preparing TiO₂ powders, nanoparticles, thin films and other titanium-containing oxide materials.
Can TTIP be used in Ziegler-Natta catalyst systems? Commercial organic-titanate technical literature also lists tetra-isopropyl titanate for selected Ziegler-Natta polymerization catalyst applications. This is a secondary specialty use rather than the main positioning of this Royalchem product page.
