Key Applications

1,3-Diaminoguanidine monohydrochloride is a nitrogen-rich bifunctional building block (guanidine + double hydrazine) widely used in:

  • Veterinary API Synthesis: Core intermediate for Robenidine hydrochloride (anticoccidial for poultry and rabbits) via condensation with 4-chlorobenzaldehyde.

  • Heterocyclic Chemistry: Precursor to 3,6-disubstituted-1,2,4,5-tetrazines (bioorthogonal click chemistry), 4-amino-1,2,4-triazoles, guanazine and fused pyrimidines.

  • High-Nitrogen & Energetic Materials: Precursor for dinitroguanidine-based energetic salts and nitrogen-rich tetrazine frameworks.

  • Advanced Materials & Environment: Chelating ligand for heavy-metal adsorbents, hydrazone-linked COF / porous-polymer research, NLO crystal salts.

Packaging & Storage Packaging: 25 kg fiber drum (double PE liner); custom packs available.
Storage: Hygroscopic — keep container tightly closed in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place away from light.
Transport: Non-dangerous goods (no UN number; not regulated under ADR/RID, IMDG, IATA).
Handling Note (GHS): Classified as an irritant — Signal word Warning; H315 (skin irritation), H319 (eye irritation); some SDS versions add H335 (respiratory irritation from dust). Wear nitrile gloves and safety goggles, avoid dust formation, and handle with local exhaust ventilation. Not classified as dangerous goods for transport.

Industrial Applications of 1,3-Diaminoguanidine Monohydrochloride

Robenidine & Veterinary APIs The largest commercial application. Condensation of DAG HCl with two equivalents of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde gives Robenidine hydrochloride (CAS 25875-50-7), an anticoccidial feed additive for poultry and rabbits. The same bis-hydrazone chemistry is used for other veterinary actives and feed-additive derivatives. Low hydrazine residue (≤ 0.3%) supports downstream API impurity control.
Tetrazines, Triazoles & Pharma R&D The two hydrazino arms condense with aldehydes or nitriles to build 3,6-disubstituted-1,2,4,5-tetrazines — key scaffolds in bioorthogonal click chemistry probes — and cyclize to 4-amino-1,2,4-triazoles, 3-hydrazino-1,2,4-triazoles, guanazine and fused pyrimidines used as pharmaceutical intermediates and ligands.
High-Nitrogen & Energetic Materials A recognized precursor for nitrogen-rich energetic salts (e.g., dinitroguanidine-based salts and diaminoguanidinium compounds) and tetrazine-based frameworks studied for insensitive energetic materials and gas-generant chemistry.

Packaging, Storage & Shipping

Packaging 25 kg fiber drum with double PE liner. Kilogram sample packs and customized packaging available on request.
Storage Hygroscopic. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from light; keep container tightly sealed after each use. Avoid contact with strong oxidizers.
Trade Terms FOB / CIF / CFR. Ports: Shanghai, Nanjing, Ningbo.
Transport Class Non-dangerous goods — no UN number assigned; not regulated under ADR/RID, IMDG or IATA. Ships via standard freight without hazmat surcharges.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 1,3-diaminoguanidine monohydrochloride mainly used for? The main commercial use is as the key intermediate for Robenidine hydrochloride, an anticoccidial veterinary drug. It is also a versatile building block for 1,2,4,5-tetrazines and 4-amino-1,2,4-triazoles, a precursor for high-nitrogen energetic materials, and a nitrogen-rich chelator/linker in heavy-metal adsorbents and COF research.
Is DAG HCl an intermediate for chlorhexidine or robenidine? Robenidine. Chlorhexidine is manufactured from hexamethylene-bis(cyanoguanidine) and 4-chloroaniline — it does not use diaminoguanidine. The two products are often confused because their Chinese names differ by one character (氯苯胍 robenidine vs 氯己定 chlorhexidine). DAG HCl condensed with 4-chlorobenzaldehyde gives robenidine hydrochloride.
Which CAS number is correct: 36062-19-8 or 38360-74-6? Both registry numbers describe 1,3-diaminoguanidine hydrochloride, but CAS 36062-19-8 (EINECS 252-854-0) is the commercially standard, REACH-registered entry used by major suppliers. CAS 38360-74-6 / EC 253-900-2 is a duplicate registration that is only pre-registered under REACH. Royalchem labels and documents use CAS 36062-19-8.
Why does the hydrazine content (≤ 0.3%) matter? Residual hydrazine is a genotoxic-class impurity that carries through condensation reactions into downstream veterinary and pharmaceutical products. Royalchem strictly controls hydrazine at ≤ 0.3% and reports it on every batch COA, simplifying downstream impurity qualification for API and feed-additive manufacturers.
Is it classified as dangerous goods? How should it be handled and stored? Not dangerous goods — no UN number; not regulated under ADR/RID, IMDG or IATA, so it ships as general cargo. Under GHS it is an irritant (Warning; H315, H319): wear gloves and goggles and avoid dust. The product is hygroscopic — store tightly sealed in a cool, dry, ventilated place.
Can you provide COA, SDS and regulatory documents? Yes. Every shipment includes a batch-specific COA (purity, melting point, moisture, hydrazine). SDS is available in multiple languages. The substance is REACH-registered (EC 252-854-0) for the EU market; for other jurisdictions (e.g., US TSCA R&D use), contact us for regulatory support before ordering.
