Product Name Chloroacetyl Chloride
CAS 79-04-9  |  EC No. 201-171-6
Synonyms: 2-chloroacetyl chloride, monochloroacetyl chloride, chloroacetic acid chloride, CAC
Formula / MW C2H2Cl2O (ClCH2COCl) / 112.94
Structure Chloroacetyl Chloride structure ClCH2COCl CAS 79-04-9 chloroacetanilide herbicide intermediate
Product Type Highly reactive bifunctional acylating agent: the acid chloride installs a chloroacetyl group on amines or alcohols, and the remaining C–Cl can be substituted further. Key intermediate for chloroacetanilide herbicides and several drugs.
Specification
  • Appearance: colorless to pale yellow clear liquid, pungent odor

  • Assay: ≥ 99%

  • Dichloroacetyl chloride: ≤ 0.8%

  • Boiling point approx. 106 °C; density approx. 1.42 g/mL (literature)

Typical values; the batch COA governs.
Applications
  • Chloroacetanilide herbicides: acylation of substituted anilines to alachlor, acetochlor, butachlor, pretilachlor and metolachlor — the largest use

  • Organophosphate insecticides: dimethoate and omethoate via N-methylchloroacetamide

  • Pharmaceuticals: lidocaine intermediate (with 2,6-dimethylaniline); diclofenac synthesis

  • Fine chemicals: general chloroacetylation reagent

Packing & Storage Dedicated lined steel drums, IBCs or ISO tanks; pack type per order. Keep tightly sealed under nitrogen, dry, in a cool ventilated dangerous-goods store, away from water, alcohols, bases, amines and oxidizers.

FAQ

What is chloroacetyl chloride? Chloroacetyl Chloride (CAS 79-04-9, ClCH2COCl, MW 112.94) is a highly reactive acid chloride used to attach a chloroacetyl group to amines and alcohols — a key intermediate for chloroacetanilide herbicides and pharmaceuticals.
Which herbicides are made from it? The chloroacetanilide family: alachlor, acetochlor, butachlor, pretilachlor and metolachlor, made by acylating the corresponding substituted aniline.
Why is dichloroacetyl chloride controlled? It is the main by-product of manufacture and carries through acylation as a dichloro impurity in the active ingredient, so it is the key quality limit.
Is chloroacetyl chloride the same as acetyl chloride? No. Acetyl chloride (CAS 75-36-5) has no chlorine on the methyl group and different uses. Always check the CAS number.
