Key Applications

Dicyclopentadiene is an importantcyclic olefin feedstock for resin, polymer and specialty chemical manufacturing.

  • PDCPD / Reaction Injection Molding (RIM):High-purity DCPD is used as the monomer for polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD). Through ring-opening metathesis polymerization, low-viscosity DCPD can be converted rapidly into tough thermoset components, making it suitable for RIM production of large and complex molded parts.

  • Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR):DCPD is an established raw material for DCPD-modified unsaturated polyester resins used in composites, FRP and other thermoset resin applications.

  • Hydrocarbon Resins:DCPD is widely used as a feedstock for DCPD-based and modified hydrocarbon resins. These resin systems can be used in adhesives, coatings, inks and related specialty formulations.

  • EPDM Elastomers:DCPD is one of the diene third-monomer options used in ethylene-propylene-diene rubber, providing residual unsaturation for subsequent crosslinking. Other commercial diene monomers such as ENB are also used depending on the EPDM grade.

  • Cyclic Olefin & Specialty Chemical Intermediates:DCPD can be thermally cracked to cyclopentadiene, which is an important starting material for norbornene derivatives, metallocene chemistry and other specialty cyclic olefin intermediates. DCPD-derived chemistry is also used in materials for optical and specialty polymer applications.

  • Fine Chemical Synthesis:Hydrogenation of DCPD followed by rearrangement provides a documented synthetic route to adamantane. DCPD and its cyclopentadiene derivatives are also used in agrochemical, fragrance and other fine-chemical intermediate production.

Industrial Applications of Dicyclopentadiene

PDCPD / RIM High-purity DCPD is the monomer for polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD). Metathesis catalysts initiate rapid polymerization after the components are mixed and injected into a mold. The low initial viscosity makes the technology particularly suitable for large, complex and relatively thin-walled molded components.
Unsaturated Polyester Resins DCPD is a well-established raw material for DCPD-modified UPR systems. These thermosetting resins are used in composites and FRP applications and represent an important industrial outlet for DCPD.
Hydrocarbon Resins DCPD is used in the manufacture of hydrocarbon resins and modified resin systems for applications including adhesives, coatings, paints, varnishes and related formulations.
EPDM DCPD is one of the diene monomers that can be incorporated as the third monomer in EPDM. The residual unsaturation provides sites for subsequent vulcanization and crosslinking.
Specialty Cyclic Olefins & Fine Chemicals DCPD is an industrial source of cyclopentadiene and a starting point for norbornene derivatives, metallocene intermediates and other specialty cyclic olefin chemistry. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct abbreviation for Dicyclopentadiene? The standard industry abbreviation for Dicyclopentadiene is DCPD. CAS number is 77-73-6. “DCPC” is not the standard abbreviation for this product.
What is DCPD mainly used for? Major industrial applications include PDCPD reaction injection molding, unsaturated polyester resins, hydrocarbon resins and EPDM. DCPD is also used as a cyclopentadiene source for cyclic olefin and fine-chemical synthesis.
Why can DCPD be either solid or liquid? DCPD has a melting point close to 32–33 °C. It may therefore appear as a crystalline solid below this temperature and as a clear liquid at warmer temperatures. This physical phase change is normal.

DCPD can be converted to cyclopentadiene and downstream norbornene-type intermediates, and DCPD-derived chemistry is used in specialty cyclic-olefin and optical-material value chains.
Does all commercial DCPD contain BHT? No. Some commercial and laboratory grades are stabilized with BHT or other inhibitors, but this should not be assumed for every DCPD grade. Buyers should confirm stabilizer type and concentration from the supplier specification, COA or SDS.
